Once ordered, a domain transfer usually follows this path:
1. Your NEW registrar sends a request to your OLD registrar to transfer the domain name to the NEW registrar.
2. Your OLD registrar checks the domain name to see if it is "locked". This is a user setting that you can change. Many registrars will lock the domain by default. If the domain name is locked, the OLD registrar tells the NEW registrar NO, and the transfer fails.
3. If the domain name was not locked at the OLD registrar, then the OLD registrar forwards the transfer request to the email address on record with the domain name for approval. If the person receiving the approval request does not receive the message (e.g. it goes into their spam folder and they don't see it, etc.) or act on it in the time allowed (usually provided in the message), and click on the approval link (or otherwise approve the transfer), then the transfer fails.
4. If the approval is completed timely, then the transfer is pending. The OLD registrar has up to five days to stop the transfer or complete the transfer. If they do nothing, then the transfer will automatically occur by default after the five-day period. Many registrars use the default to complete transfers, since it requires no effort on their part.
NOTE: If you are transferring a domain that expires within five days, our recommendation is to renew it with your OLD registrar, make any nameserver changes that are necessary to point to your new website address (as appropriate), and then initiate the transfer. Emergency transfers don't work well, since the unlock and approval steps must occur first, and the OLD registrar controls the timing.
