Virtual Private Servers (VPS), sometimes called virtual dedicated servers, offer clients the power and control of a dedicated server at a much lower cost. Virtual Private Servers are multiple server partitions on a single physical server that share hardware, licenses and management effort with maximum efficiency. Each VPS performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server for its users and applications as it can be rebooted independently and has its own root access, users, IP addresses, memory, processes, files, applications, system libraries and configuration files.
Why can't I just use a Virtual Hosting package instead?
For the client, this means greater uptime, stability, and control. With shared hosting, all of the websites on the server share the same processes. This means a faulty script or malicious program on a shared server has the potential to slow down or cripple the server, causing others' websites to suffer. Clients on a VPS are never allowed to exceed their CPU, memory, and disk allocations, which means if their website takes a hit, yours is still running strong.
